It hit me!

As I was changing Elianna's diaper early yesterday evening, it hit me.  I'll be going back to work soon.  Not only that, but the tears came gushing out without stop.  Yesterday was a bit tiresome (I believe Elianna is starting to teethed) and as I was changing her diaper she gave this huge beautiful smile, and I told her, "I'm going to miss those when I'm at work."  As you can imagine the tears came.   Mark had to console me twice because I had two rounds of tears.  He reminded me that it would only be for two months.  I know this but it still hurts.

The plan is for me to return to work after Easter and Mark will take leave and be the at home dad until June, when my school year ends.  I'll be returning to work in July but part time (50%); working 2.5 days for the new school year.  Those days Elianna will be at grandmas' house; both grandmothers are waiting with excitement.  Elianna will be 7 mos then and I'm sure they will both enjoy her tremendously.

2 months and counting

Yesterday we had Elianna's 2 month check up and everything is looking good!  She is hitting all her benchmarks and then some.  There were 4 shots that she needed to have, but I only consented to two because I don't want to overload her with shots.  In two weeks we'll go back and get the rest.

Eli is now 11 pounds and 3 ouncez and is 23 inches long.  Her newborn clothing items no longer fit her and fitting her perfectly are 0-3 months....my little girl is growing.

Here are some things she can do now:

*she uses both her forearms to hold herself up when she is being held
*no longer stays asleep at a restaurant; she wants out of her seat and be part of the dinner
*is very social and loves to talk
*will take turns talking
*takes her pacifier ;)
*seems to enjoy tummy time
*brings her hand to her mouth
*has started to eat 7 oz
&
*when held will stand

An hour at a time

Yesterday we had a visit with Dr. Malhis, for Elianna's hip.  Everything is looking great!  He explained that as he rotates her hip it does not dislocated; everything stays in place.  The ligaments have contracted and both hips feel the same as they are moved....YAY!  X-rays were taken and with that, Dr. Malhis takes measurement and everything is aligning as it should.....Can I get an AMEN!

We are now able to take off her harness.  At first he said for a few hours a day, but then he confirmed her age and reduced it to an hour; in fact, enough time to wash and dry the harness.  She is 7 weeks old and he said if she was closer to 3 months he would recommend  more than an hour.  I'll take whatever he'll give me.

Next month she may transition into a less invasive harness that will only be worn from the waist down, with no bar in the middle!  Eli is still doing great with the current harness and we have been given the okay to readjust it as we see the need.  Keep them prayers coming!

Breast-feeding

In one sentence....it's a life style.  I had no idea what it involved before having Elianna.  Most of what I understood before hand was, you either breast-fed or bottle-fed your baby and be careful with the medication you take.  Well, it turns out that there is more to it.  As mentioned previously, in the hospital we supplemented breast-pumped milk with formula and that maybe lasted a week.  It started out with a 50/50 mix and everyday the formula portion was less.  Within two days of being home my milk starting really coming in.  I have not been able to get Eli back to the breast so I pump everything she eats.  At first it was an adjustment, not to mention the hormones were still not settled.  Having to stop what I was doing every 2-3 hours to pump or waking up in the middle of the night, when Eli was sleeping and pump because I was so engorged was not fun.  I had to look at the positive side, this is the best for Eli, I'm not having to go to a job so this is part of my new job, and as the days past it became easier and just normal for me.  Now I'm able to sleep through the night, so that is a BIG plus!

Also, learning what foods I should not be eating was an eye opener.  For instance, dairy, onions, avocados, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, spicy foods and citrus.  Turns out that these foods will make it hard for Eli to digest her milk and/or give her gas.  At the very least I know most of these foods gave her gas.  I've been told and read that at about 3-4 months an infant stomach/digestive tract starts to mature and digest becomes easier for them.  I'm hoping by that time I can introduce some of these foods little by little.  I can't wait to have my mango with lemon and chile again!

Elianna is one month! WOW, that went fast.

Our baby girl turned a month a week ago and boy how our lives and Elianna have changed!  Here are somethings Eli is able to do:

*smiles
*tracks Mark's iPhone side to side and up and down
*her hands will open up at times
*holds her head up (most of the time) when held in an upright position
*at times will not cry during a changing
*is starting to sleep through the night or at least 5-6 hours straight
*turns her head side to side
*usually takes in about 4 oz a feeding
*her left hip is still in place and her harness got readjusted for the better!
   *does not like the pacifier
*grabs on to mom's hair and does not let go
*has begun to produce the "ah" sound

Mark and I  have learned the art of burping, putting a baby to sleep, diaper rash, and what to eat or not to eat while breast-feeding.

I technically am not breast-feeding, but breast-pumping.  In the hospital I was not producing enough milk so we had to supplement with formula (mixed it up with the breast-milk) and Eli learned real quick that the bottle gave her food a lot faster and more at one time.  So, since I was an emotional/hormonal basket-case I gave into her.

The Baby Bump Story...

Okay, this is a bit late but, I really wanted to post this; the growing belly.  I started taking pictures at 10 weeks pregnant up until the last day before I delivered.  Enjoy the show!

10 Weeks pregnant
At this point my jeans no longer fit me.  The belly was expanding and too much junk in the trunk!  Friends were already noticing my bump.

15 Weeks pregnant
Maternity clothes are in full affect at this time.

Do I miss the bump?  ....yes.  I don't miss it when it's time to sleep, take a shower or bend down.  The first thing I noticed after the surgery was my stomach; the smaller size, lack of movement and overall feel.  It is nice to get back into my pre-pregnancy clothes and also put something on and just swim in it!

Developmental Displacement of the Hip - DDH

Our baby girl has been diagnosed with DDH, Developmental Displacement of the Hip.  Due to her breech position (mainly), her left hip bone did not fuse together with the pelvic bone(s).  Technically, her hip can dislocate at any time.  She is and has not been in any pain, due to the fact that area is not bone yet, it is cartilage.  Before leaving the hospital we were informed that there may be a potential hip problem, but at that time it was not showing itself, but to mention it at Elianna's first doctor's visit, which was the day after leaving the hospital.

Elianna's doctor did feel a "clunck" when moving her hip and referred us to the Specialist.  On January 8th, he confirmed the unattached hip bone.  The good news is that it is all very repairable and there are no surgeries or casts involved.  All of her parts and ligaments are there they just have to be kept in place for them to fuse together appropriately.  Elianna has to wear a harness that keeps the hip in place.  This will have to be worn for (give or take) 6 months.  As we are reading up on this, many other babies have about a 3-4 month period with the harness.  We are hoping that will be the case with her.  The doctor that is treating her, has given us an excellent outcome and is the type that wants to do everything in his power to correct this.  As he calls it, the "treatment," will include a the current harness, then something scaled down to her legs only and then rehab/usage of her legs.

Three days after having the harness on her, we were scheduled back to the Specialist's office for a follow up and he could already feel improvement in her hip.  The ligaments had already started contracting and her hip was still in place, which is what we want!  This past Monday we had another check and everything looks good and with improvements.

She does not seem to mind the harness and again, she does not have any pain, so for her this is her norm.  Diaper changing and any type of bathing has been modified.  Also, at this point she can't wear pants because they move the position of her legs.

I'm very thankful that the displacement was caught very early.  Whether it takes 6 months or less, it will go in an blink of an eye.  If left untreated, mostly possibly Elianna would have a hard time learning how to walk, walk with a waddle or maybe a limp and in her early adulthood years deal with pain, which will then lead to surgeries.  If this would have been caught at about a year and a half of age, the only option there would be is surgery.  As her doctor said, "She'll be crawling and walking in no time."  .....yes she will!

As a mom, it really pulls at your heartstrings, even though this is going to be for just a small period of time, as a parent you don't want to her the word treatment in regards to your 9 day old baby.  So I did have to take some time and let that process, but the teacher side of me came out and set me straight.  After all these years of working with young children, teaching them academics, language, how to crawl, listening skills, etc. God has prepared me to support my baby's development and to be her #1 advocate.  As a family, we are doing fine and soon this will be a vague memory.

Mark and I ask that you keep us in prayer for everything to continue going well.  We'll keep you updated and once we are given the okay for the harness to come off completely, I think we will have a special going away party for it.
